Stopmusclepain.com provides new and regularly updated information on the management of nerve related muscle discomfort and/or pain, including myofascial pain and fibromyalgia.

Electrical Twitch Obtaining Intramuscular Stimulation (eToims® Twitch Relief Method)

eToims® is a new anatomical and physiological approach to treat neuromuscular pain. It is a markedly innovative discovery in medicine as common pain therapies do not attempt to stimulate the neuromuscular junction, which is the source of the vast majority of neck, back, and other nerve-related muscle pain. Back pain alone is the second most common neurological ailment in the United States.

eToims® Twitch Relief Method: Role in Relieving Neuromuscular Pain

The mediate cause of neuromuscular pain is muscle shortening and/or spasm which is under the control of neuromuscular junctions, also known as trigger points. eToims® ability to stimulate deep neuromuscular junctions allows muscles in spasm to relax. Deep muscle fibers in spasm produce the most painful traction/compression/distortion effect on pain-sensitive structures such as intervertebral discs, bone and joints and other pain receptors. The inability of common pain therapies to stimulate the neuromuscular junction explains why typical treatment modalities often appear ineffective in long-term neuromuscular pain management.

Our ability to relax these deep muscles to resolve or reduce pain is the main reason why patients continue to seek long-term eToims® management for improvement in quality-of-life.

Importance of Twitch Elicitation in Neuromuscular Pain Management

Since 1990, Jennifer Chu, M.D., Associate Professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine pioneered research to treat the mediate cause of neuromuscular pain resulting from muscle shortening and/or spasm under the control of neuromuscular junctions. Very brief electrical stimulation applied to neuromuscular junctions to elicit characteristic twitches which are brisk focal muscle contractions, produces active local muscle exercise and stretching which, in turn:

  1. ends traction/compression/distortion on selective pain producing structures, .
  2. ends pain producing local nerve and muscle anoxia, (severe lack of oxygen resulting in permanent damage), by increasing intramuscular inflow of blood carrying oxygen, and other nutrients, and
  3. ends pain producing accumulation of local muscle tissue wastes, by increasing outflow of fluids carrying these wastes.

The twitches essentially provide active local exercise and scientific massage to release, relax and stretch problematic, tight muscles, mobilizing tissues from within the muscle. Simply put, eToims® attempts to restore to "normal", changes found in involved pathologic muscles associated with pain.

eToims® Twitch Relief Method: Role in Improving Quality of Life

Unlike invasive procedures and many injected or oral medications including narcotics, eToims® Twitch Relief Method does not interfere with family/home responsibilities, social interactions, one's occupation, and the following activities: recreation, sex, self-care and activities of daily living. Living with chronic pain tends to isolate the sufferer. As the eToims® Twitch Relief Method does not promote mental dullness or drowsiness, impairments associated with narcotics and other medications, it enables patient interaction with others at work, home, and in various social situations. eToims® Twitch Relief Method enables interactions and enables chronic pain patients the opportunity to "really" live.
